Do your teams have an efficient SAS dataset viewer to QC TLFs — without writing a single line of code?

In the AI era, shouldn’t programmers have a better SAS dataset viewer to verify AI-generated code?

Since data is the core of every clinical trial, shouldn’t all stakeholders have access to a powerful and efficient dataset viewer?

Would you like to save at least one hour per week for every hands-on contributor—and calculate how many total hours this means for your department?

Even if you don’t prioritize time savings, would you like to make your team’s work life easier, faster, and more enjoyable—at low cost?

It looks like you have some concerns!

  • Q: We are moving to R. Does it support R datasets like .RDS?
  • A: Yes. StatDataViewer can handle the datasets of SAS, R, SPSS and Stata.
  • Q: Is 24/7 support available?
  • A: No. Support is provided during regular business hours (EST). StatDataViewer will not become a bottleneck for any critical activities such as FDA submissions. You will always have SAS Universal Viewer and the built-in SAS dataset viewer as alternatives. That said, I will always do my best to assist you promptly.
  • Q: And what about security?
  • A: For the enterprise edition, the source code is available for security audits. If you don't wish to rely on my assurances, you can rely on the transparency of the source code itself.
  • Q: Is Helper Software LLC a one-person company?
  • A: Yes, it is. This venture is also my way of demonstrating what can be achieved with the support of AI tools.
  • Q: Is a live demo available?
  • A: Yes. Please send a meeting invitation to: support@helper.software. For clients in the New York Metropolitan Area, in-person meetings are available.

As a SAS user for nearly 20 years, I’ve often struggled without an efficient dataset viewer.

I have mainly used three SAS dataset viewers: SAS System Viewer, SAS Universal Viewer and Dataset Viewer of LSAF.

The SAS System Viewer

  • A useful, free, but increasing limited tool.
  • Focus only on individual dataset.
  • Not supported anymore by SAS.
SAS Viewer 9.1 for Windows

If you’ve never heard of SAS System Viewer, don’t worry — it simply means you’re still young.

The SAS Universal Viewer

  • A totally new application.
  • A library or directory-oriented tool.
  • The filtering system is data aware and largely menu driven.
SAS Universal Viewer

I find the filter in SAS Universal Viewer frustrating — and the application feels very slow.

The Data Explorer of SAS LSAF (Life Science Analytics Framework)

  • Fast, intuitive data filtering
  • Seamless descriptive statistics
  • Often cited as LSAF’s best feature
LSAF Data Explorer

I bet you’ve never used this version of SAS LSAF. I kind of miss it.

If you ask, “Why not mention the built-in dataset viewer in SAS for Windows?” — honestly, every time I think of it, I just want to close my laptop.

As a SAS programmer, often the one who knows the data best in the clinical trial team, I use two monitors: one for coding, the other for viewing SAS datasets.

With every line of SAS code I write, the need for a better dataset viewer grows stronger.

Back then, seven years ago, I couldn’t find a better SAS dataset viewer on the market.

But I am a SAS programmer — and a programmer after all — so why not develop my own SAS dataset viewer?

After many tries, I developed the SAS dataset viewer "SASHelper" while at a big pharmaceutical company.

SASHelper has been used by hundreds of statisticians, SAS programmers and data managers - both employees and contractors.

I tried several times and failed to make SASHelper open source. So I redesigned and rewrote a better version as my side project.

When my side project was nearly complete, I left my job. After a few weeks of enhancements, I released it here.

Let me share its key features that you’re sure to love!

Fast performance powered by C/C++

Library support — easily open all SAS datasets in a folder

Library filter — view one subject’s data across domains, applied to all datasets in a folder (e.g., where usubjid = "study01-01-001")

Dataset filter - No matter if you like context menus, shortcut keys, or hand-coding, the dataset filter adapts to your style.

Just one letter for lightning speed (and to save your pinkie) — try d for dataset filter or h to hide a column.

Frequency — supports both character and numeric variables, with the ability to select multiple variables (e.g., hold Ctrl to choose more than one).

Frequency - Quickly count unique subjects (USUBJID) across selected variables.

Switch quickly between the data window and the variable window.

Jump quickly to any row and any variable (column).

Quickly hide and unhide variables (columns).

Search any string across the entire dataset.

Quickly open a dataset, whether it’s already open or in a folder.

There are too many features to list them all here ...

Feel free to ask if a feature is available. If it’s valuable but missing, I’ll add it.
